Drowned teen’s brother suspects foul play

Relatives of drowned teenager, Nicholas Chance who was among three persons who drowned in Mayaro, are demanding a second autopsy be carried out on his body, since they suspect foul play surrounds the teenager’s death. Elder brother of the dead teen, Kevon Chance visited Sunday Newsday’s office in Port-of-Spain yesterday and explained that several “marks of violence” were noticeably visible on his brother’s body when he identified the body. According to the elder Chance, “When I went to Forensics to identify my brother’s body, he had a big hole to the back of his head, there was a hole in his back and his neck was broken. The soles of his feet were also separated,” said Chance.

The autopsy which was conducted on Thursday, stated that Chance died as a result of drowning, but his relatives are not taking this lightly. “Just before we got the death certificate from Forensics, an employee there, a woman, told us, to brace ourselves, since she too believed that my brother was beaten to death,” Chance explained. The grief stricken brother is also calling for police officers to investigate thoroughly, what exactly led to his brother staying with “strangers” in Mayaro.

“These people they say my brother was staying by, I believe to be the same people who send him out there. All this could have been prevented,” lamented Chance. Chance, 16, and two others, Joseph Pierre, 17, and Timothy De Four, 23, all went missing when they failed to return from a fishing trip in waters of Mayaro on Sunday. In the meantime, Chance’s funeral remains on hold since his relatives plan to take their concerns to the Rio Claro police who is investigating the triple drowning. Once permission is granted, the family will be seeking a second autopsy tomorrow.
