Chin Lee sues Panday
Former National Security Minister Howard Chin Lee yesterday filed a writ against Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday for damages, including aggravated and exemplary damages for slander. The writ, filed by attorney Gabrielle Gellineau on behalf of Chin Lee, is seeking damages for slander contained in an address delivered by Panday at a UNC working session at the Union Claxton Bay Senior Comprehensive School last Sunday.
Chin Lee, who is now the Tourism Minister, is also seeking damages for libel contained in/and or arising out of the publication of the said address, in an article headed “Panday alleges ministerial drug link,” published by the Trinidad Publishing Company on page 3 of the newspaper dated May 23, 2005. He is also seeking an injunction to restrain the defendant whether by himself, his agents or otherwise from further speaking, publishing or causing to be published the said or any similar words defamatory of the plaintiff.
