Ex-YTC inmate gunned down
A former Youth Training Centre (YTC) inmate, recently released from the institution, was gunned down on Thursday night. Dead is Matthew Voison, 17, of Lastique Street, East Dry River, Laventille. Police believe his execution is directly related to the robbery of two gold chains from a gang member’s relative three hours earlier on Quarry Street, East Dry River. According to reports, Voison, alias “Mamo,” was liming with friends on Quarry Street around 9 pm, when two gunmen approached the group and started firing shots.
Voison was hit five times in the head and died instantly. Police sources told Newsday that the killing resulted from the robbery of a gang member’s relative The gang then went in search of Voison. Police are also calling on the Ministry of Health to investigate the length of time it takes a District Medical Officer (DMO) to visit a murder scene. “DMOs are taking too long to come to a murder scene, denying the police quality hours when we could be doing something else.
In recent cases like that of Voison or Keith Noel in Belmont on Thursday morning, the DMO took four hours to get to the scene. “There have been cases where the DMO took longer. We understand at times a DMO might be swamped with work, but these long delays are happening too often, resulting in the massive use of limited manpower and resources for long spells. “It is time the powers-that-be look into the situation and do something about the hours, giving police more time to respond to other crimes.”
