Cop prevents possible murder
QUICK action by St James Police Station Sergeant Tommy Saroda on Friday night foiled the possible murder of a Taiwanese seaman on the Beetham flyover and the possible death or serious injuries to patrons at a St James nightclub. Saroda reportedly saw a Taiwanese seaman being pursued by two armed men along the flyover. Two hours later the officer intervened in another incident at a pub on Mucurapo Road, St James where patrons were being beaten by four armed men. According to reports, about 8.30 pm, Saroda was returning from Mayaro on Friday night with his family. Upon reaching the flyover he observed a man being pursued by two men, one armed with a knife and the other with a cutlass. The officer stopped the vehicle, called out "Police! "Police!" and give chase to the men who escaped without their weapons. Saroda called for back-up and officers of the Besson Street Police Station responded. They carried out a search of the area but to no avail. The Taiwanese seaman was handed over to the police but because of the language barrier he could not give a statement. Eyewitnesses confirmed the men had caught the seaman and was about to stab him when the policeman intervened. In almost similar fashion, two hours later, Saroda was driving along Mucurapo Road, St James, when he observed patrons at a bar being beaten by four men. He again stopped, identified himself and went to investigate. Similar to the first scenario, the men fled the scene. Police believe the policeman foiled a possible robbery of patrons. The injured patrons were taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where they were treated and discharged. PC Powder of the St James Police Station is investigating the incidents.
