P/Town woman dies after accident
A SIX-MONTH-OLD baby is hospitalised in serious condition following a Princes Town accident on Sunday, which also claimed the life of a 54-year-old woman. According to police reports, caterer Daisy Mungal-Mohammed, 54, of 40 Lothians Road, Princes Town, was in the company of her husband Michael Mohammed and her 41-year-old sister Jenny, who was holding her (Jenny) grandson six-month-old Bryan about 3.20 pm, when a red Ford Avenger travelling east along the Manahambre Main Road, lost control and slammed into the Mohammeds’ car. The Avenger was driven by a 30-year-old man of Jalen Street, Princes Town.
Mungal-Mohammed, a mother of one and grandmother of three, was pinned between the Avenger and her husband’s white Nissan B14 Sentra. Baby Bryan was pitched in the air as the impact caused his grandmother to release him as she was also struck. Mungal-Mohammed was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where she died while undergoing emergency surgery. The baby was also taken to hospital and was up to yesterday warded in critical condition. The baby’s grandmother, Jenny, was also warded but in a stable condition. Mungal-Mohammed’s husband, Michael, who witnessed the accident told Newsday that he and his wife went to pick Pommerac fruits for a friend in Morvant.
He said that while they were standing near the car, his wife said she wanted to take the baby for a drive. “Daisy said she wanted to carry the baby for a little drive and to make her happy; I went along with the idea,” a grieving Mohammed said. “As we were all walking towards my car which was parked on the pavement I got a vibes that something was going to happen to the baby and really and truly I did not want to go but just to make Daisy happy I did not bother to tell her anything,” he added. The weeping man said his wife was about to enter the front passenger seat of the car when he saw a red car swerving around a nearby corner. “I was there thinking to myself ‘O God let this car pass.’ Then I realised the driver had lost control.”
“The car had just passed and as I sighed in relief, it swung and slammed into Daisy. She was slammed into the left car door and her head banged into the window, smashing it into pieces” Michael said as the tears welled in his eyes. Stating that he loved his wife dearly and would miss her very much, he was now concerned for the well- being of baby Bryan who is now battling for his life at hospital. Sgt Errol Ramdath of the Princes Town Police Station is continuing enquiries.
