Accused denies killing ‘X Files’

A MORVANT man on trial for the murder of Andre "X Files" Lindsey yesterday denied knowledge of the killing, and insisted he had been knocked unconscious during a fist fight prior to the fatal stabbing.

Nigel "Dufo" Mayers said when he got to the NHA compound in Morvant on the morning of April 22, 2003, to collect his pay, he walked over to Sherwin "Bulls" Griffith and another man he knew as Wayne, who were arguing.

Shortly after, Nigel said, his father Jimmy "Shabazz" Bournes came over and tried to settle the disagreement. Griffith cursed Bournes and he (Nigel) slapped Griffith, who in turn "cuffed" Bournes.

Nigel said he "swung a kick" at Griffith’s upper thigh and Griffith "cuffed" him down. He said when he regained consciousness some time later, he remembered a woman wiping the left side of his face, which was "buss way and bleeding." The accused said he was lying on the ground "bazoodee."

Nigel said Bournes helped him up and took him to his (Bournes’) home, where his mother attended to the injuries.

He said he declined his mother’s offer to take him to the hospital, and ended up "crashing out" the rest of the day there.

He said he did not know who Andre "X Files" Lindsey was, and he did not stab anyone on that day.

Nigel, his brother Akeido Mayers, and Bournes, are on trial before Justice Prakash Moosai at the Port-of-Spain Second Criminal Court charged with Lindsey’s murder.

The three men, all of Pashley Street, Laventille, are being represented by attorneys Rangee Dolsingh SC, Wendy Doughdeen Bally, Hayden Sinclair Douglas, Michelle Solomon and Wayne Sturge.

State attorneys Cheron Raphael and Natasha George are prosecuting.

The trial continues today.
