Murder spree continues
Just after noon yesterday, an unidentified man became this country’s 144th murder victim for the year. He was the third person killed within 13 hours. Just hours before, Arnold Hamilton, 32, alias "Wolfy," was gunned down a short distance from his home while walking along Covigne Road, Diego Martin. And security officer Wayne Sebero, 40, was beaten to death outside his Gilkes Street home in Diego Martin by residents and relatives. According to reports, residents of Clifton Street, Port-of-Spain, heard a single gunshot around 12.45 pm. When they investigated, they found the body of an unidentified male of African descent. The six-foot man was dressed in a blue jersey and three-quarter jeans. He had bullet wounds in the back of his head. Police believe he was shot in the mouth. District Medical Officer Dr David Ibeleme visited the scene and ordered the body removed to the Forensic Science Centre. Visiting the scene were Senior Supt Errol Denoon, Insp Sahadeo Singh, Sgt Randolph Boyce, and Winston Stewart who is investigating. Just an hour before, Hamilton, a foreman at the Diego Martin Unemployment Relief Programme, was walking at the corner of Covigne Road and Diego Martin Main Road, when two men walked up to him and fired five shots into his body. The father of two ran a short distance away before collapsing on a car, where he died. Police later seized an abandoned car with bloodstains on Covigne Road. Police and residents said Hamilton was involved in several ghost gangs in the area and regularly collected $100 taxes from workers to get their salaries. He was also said to have made a number of enemies in the area. Hamilton was found with a worksheet containing names of persons to be employed in URP gangs starting on Monday. He had $4,000 in his pocket. Some residents described him as a kind man who did wrong, but also meant well and helped people. Visiting the scene were Senior Supt Road, Supt Millington, Insps Lezama and Moonilal, Sgt Martin and Cpl Dan. Insp Nandram Moonilal is investigating. Concerning Sebero’s murder, reports revealed that a female relative, attracted by screams coming from a house at Gilkes Street, Diego Martin, around 11.30 on Monday night, investigated and allegedly found the man having sex with a pre-teen. The relative called out to the girl’s mother, grabbed sticks and began to beat the man. A screaming Sebero ran outside, where villagers joined the girl’s relatives and continued beating him. Sebero later collapsed, and residents contacted the police. Police arrived on the scene and found Sebero’s lifeless body. The DMO arrived and pronounced Sebero dead, and ordered the body removed to the Forensic Science Centre for autopsy. Four persons, two family members and two villagers, are currently assisting the police with the investigation. Visiting the scene were Supt Millington, Sgt Ramsubhag, Cpls Gosien and Prescod, and PCs Charles and Sookram. Cpl Prescod is continuing investigations. One hundred persons had been murdered during the same period last year. In all, five murders were committed in three days, four of which were in the Western Division.
