$21,000 disappears from police office

Fraud Squad officers are investigating the disappearance of $21,000 from an office at the Port-of-Spain Divisional Headquarters, at Serpentine Road, St Clair.

Reports revealed that the money was secured in a drawer at the police station on Saturday by a clerk at the office. On Tuesday, a check was made and the money was missing.

Senior Supt Errol Denoon, whose office is located at the Port-of-Spain Divisional Headquarters, alerted officers of the Fraud Squad and the Port-of-Spain Criminal Investigations Department.

Yesterday, officers carried out checks for fingerprints and several persons were interviewed. Newsday learnt that the stolen money represented cash which was supposed to be paid to police officers for extra duties.

Sources revealed yesterday that the theft of the money was an inside job since there were no signs of forced entry into the area where the money was stored. Senior officers said yesterday that an arrest is imminent.

Investigations are continuing.
