Panday back in court today
Former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday will reappear before a Port-of-Spain magistrate today after spending the past week at the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca. The leader of the Opposition United National Congress, who was charged last week by officers of the Anti-Corruption Investiga-tions Bureau with wife Oma Panday for corruptly receiving 25,000 pounds sterling as an inducement or reward from businessmen Ishwar Galbaransingh and Carlos John, will reappear before Magistrate Ejenny Espinet in the Port-of-Spain First Court. Galbaransingh and John will also appear with the UNC leader and his wife as they are also charged in the same matter. The charge for both Galbaransingh and John state that they corruptly gave the sum of 25,000 pounds sterling to Panday as an inducement or reward in December 1998. Panday had last week refused the $750,000 bail sum set by the magistrate, opting to remain incarcerated. His wife Oma, however, secured her $750,000 bail sum, while businessman Carlos John secured the same bail sum. Galbaransingh secured $1 million bail. Newsday understands that Panday’s supporters have been granted permission by Port-of-Spain Mayor Murchison Brown to congregate at Woodford Square today during the UNC leader’s scheduled court appearance. This was confirmed by Opposition Chief Whip, Ganga Singh, during an interview at the House of Representatives yesterday.
