Kidnappers want $2M for Arima mechanic
KIDNAPPERS are demanding $2 million for the release of Arima mechanic Sheldon Moonsammy. The father of two was abducted on Tuesday evening while fixing a car outside his businessplace — Sammy’s Auto Electrical garage — at Quesnel Street, Arima. Moonsammy’s brother, Sherwin, 21, attempted to prevent the abduction but was shot in the process. According to reports, Sheldon, 31, was working on a car at the garage at 2.30 pm, when four masked men pulled up in a silver Nissan Primera car, grabbed the mechanic and bundled him into the car.
Sherwin tried to grab his brother out of the car, but was stopped by two of the masked men who dragged him away into the garage and shot him twice in his chest. Moonsammy’s business associates told Newsday that neither Sheldon nor any of his family were on the reported “kidnap list,” and they believe it was an “independent” kidnapping. Police sources confirmed that the Moonsammy family received demands for $2 million a few hours after his abduction. Sherwin is reportedly in a satisfactory condition at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital.
