Panday spends day in bed

HAVING spent all day resting after his eight-day stint in jail, Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday will make his first public appearance when he attends the sitting of the House of Representatives today. Panday’s daughter, Mikela, told Newsday yesterday that her father spent most of the day yesterday sleeping. "When he arrived home on Wednesday, he had something to eat and went to bed," Mikela said.

United National Congress CEO Dr Tim Goopeesingh, who stood bail for Panday with his wife Kamini, said the party had advised the Opposition Leader to "get some much needed rest" and avoid any unnecessary activity. Goopeesingh said Panday was even advised not to accept telephone calls at his home to ensure he is properly rested.

Panday was greeted by wife Oma at his Bryan’s Gate, Phillipine home at about 6.30 pm on Wednesday. He left the prison in Arouca in a black sports utility vehicle which took him home to wife Oma and daughter Mikela. Oma held and hugged her husband when he opened the gates to their home. She quickly ushered him inside the living room. Panday had chosen jail at the maximum security prison after he made his first court appearance on May 31, charged with corruptly receiving ?25,000 from businessman Ish Galbaransingh and former government minister Carlos John.

Panday’s acceptance of bail on Wednesday came hours after members of the Inter Religious Organisation clergy — Rev Cyril Paul, Roman Catholic Archbishop Edward Gilbert, and Noble Khan, visited him in jail.

After today’s sitting, Panday will deliver the feature address at a political meeting tonight at Rio Claro Junction. Also slated to address the meeting are MPs Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Kelvin Ramnath, Harry Partap, Ortoire/Mayaro MP Winston ‘Gypsy’ Peters and Goopeesingh.
