Merry, Martin battle for trial victory

ARCH-RIVALS Simon Merry and Ben Martin are neck-and-neck after yesterday’s penultimate round of action in the national senior golf trials, currently taking place at the St Andrew’s Golf Course, Moka, Maraval.

In the men’s category, Merry shot an even-round 72 yesterday for a score of 213 while fellow teenager Martin had a round of 71 for a tally of 214.

It seems likely that one of the two will emerge victorious after today’s final round, as veteran Carlos "Sexy" Baynes is a distant third with 221.

Baynes’ score of 79 yesterday virtually ended his hopes of capturing the title.

Completing the division were Corey Hamel-Smith 224, Shane Costelloe 227, Luke Thompson 229, Aldorray Downes and Christian de Meillac 232, Kyle Knaggs 234, Kevin Ragoo 238 and Jesse Jattan 239.

Four national junior players are competing in the women’s category, with Tracey Clarke holding a seven-stroke lead over Diana Torry entering today’s final day.

Clarke, who carded 81 yesterday, has a tally of 237 with Torry next on 244, followed by Victoria Seenath 252 and Martine De Gannes 253.
