No DEA probe into ‘PNM officials’

TOP OFFICERS of the Organised Crime and Narcotics Unit (OCNU) yesterday said they had no information about any investigations allegedly being carried out by the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) into three PNM officials.

Speaking at a UNC public meeting in Rio Claro last Friday, Siparia MP Kamla Persad-Bissessar claimed that the DEA was investigating three top PNM officials and a report had been sent to Prime Minister Patrick Manning.

Contacted yesterday, Persad-Bissessar said this was information which was related to her, she did not have any hard evidence on the matter and was seeking clarification from the Prime Minister.

Asked whether the PNM officials she spoke about in Rio Claro were government ministers or party officials, all the Siparia MP would say was that they were "officials." However, senior OCNU officers said they were unaware of any such investigation being carried out by the DEA. They added that any DEA investigation being carried out in Trinidad and Tobago would be handled jointly with the OCNU as this was the established procedure.

Efforts yesterday to contact National Security Minister Martin Joseph and Attorney General John Jeremie for comment were unsuccessful.
