Social Justice theme for Labour Day

THEMED "Social Justice for All," this year’s annual Labour Day celebrations are expected to attract big crowds at the traditional birthplace of labour — Charlie King Junction, Fyzabad.

The Federation of Independent Trade Unions (FITUN) president, David Abdulah, said that the theme of this year’s celebrations was founded on the many problems facing employees in the workplace, which they could be solved by the implementation of a system of social justice and equity.

Fyzabad Labour Day celebrations, Abdulah said, begin with a wreath-laying ceremony at the grave of labour stalwart — Tubal Uriah Buzz Butler. He said that the celebrations this year would signal another phase in the fight against rising food prices and the cost of living by the umbrella trade union organisation — FITUN. FITUN recently embarked on a drive for some 50,000 signatures to highlight the public’s dissatisfaction with the high cost of groceries and market produce.

The march will begin at Avocat Junction and proceed along the main road to the Fyzabad Junction where union members will be addressed by a number of prominent trade unionists including Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union president general Errol McLeod.

A number of activities are also being planned in the run-up to Labour Day including the annual Miss Labour Day pageant at OWTU Hall in Fyzabad.
