6-wheel truck crashes into house

KURT WRIGHT, of Bloody Bay, in Tobago’s remote northern end, virtually stared death in the face yesterday when a six-wheeler truck, loaded with sand, crashed into his home while he was busy preparing a meal in the kitchen.

Still shaken over the incident, the 37-year-old man told Newsday yesterday’s meal could have very well been his last. Wright was standing in the kitchen when he heard a loud crash and felt the entire house shake.

As a frightened Wright peeped out from the kitchen door, he saw the truck, which belongs to Raghunath Singh and Company Ltd, ‘‘parked’’ in what was once his living room.

Wright said the incident occurred around 8.30 am, yet three hours later, not a single police officer had arrived on the scene.

A curious crowd of villagers and workers from the truck company were on hand when Newsday arrived.

Everyone praised Wright’s good fortune at being in the right part of the house at the right time.

"I was in the kitchen preparing something to eat when I hear the noise. I look out and the car was there, but the truck was in the house. I just go through the back door," a dazed Wright told Newsday.

Eyewitness reports indicate the truck was proceeding down a steep hill when it suddenly veered off the road, missed Wright’s parked car and crashed full speed into his house which is made of concrete and wood. It was reported that the truck driver experienced difficulty with the gears and braking system. Other members of Wright’s family were not at home at the time. Wright’s wife is currently attending classes at the Teachers’ Training College in Trinidad.

The driver, who was not immediately identified, reportedly sustained minor injuries and was taken to Scarborough Hospital. Wright said he had held preliminary discussions with a representative of the truck company — which is involved in the construction of the L’Anse Fourmi/Charlotteville Link Road — and was assured the company would assist in relocating him temporarily. Regarding the issue of compensation, Wright said this would subsequently be worked out with company officials. This is the second incident within the past two months in which a truck was involved in an accident in the Bloody Bay area.

On April 19, Chemeka "Kofi" Kerr, 19, died when he was struck by a truck while riding a bicycle.

Investigations into yesterday’s incident are continuing.
