High food prices for Labour Day rally
Escalating food prices will form part of the agenda for Sunday’s Labour Day rally at Charlie King Junction, Fyzabad. “Not only will we be presenting more than 50,000 signatures on a petition calling for something to be done about high food prices from persons in Arima, Chaguanas, Port-of-Spain and other areas, we will also be making a profound statement on the issue,” said Ann Chan Chow, assistant secretary of the Federation of Integrated Trade Unions and Non-Governmental. Organisations (Fitun). At the time, the group was collecting signatures for its petition at City Gate.
“Food prices affect everyone and everything from family life, to employment, to crime. It is time Government subsidise agriculture to make foodstuff cheaper for the people. “TT is too rich a country for people to be hungry. People should have at least the basic food items in their kitchens. “It is time also the Government stop giving away rich fertile soil to build houses, and concentrate on making food more available.” Chan Chow promised that the collection of signatures for the petition is just part of the first stage and, on Sunday, after the statement, the second stage would be launched.
