Police hold suspect in serial rapist probe

AN anonymous call yesterday led police to a suspect in their investigation of a serial rapist in South Trinidad. The man, in his 20s, was held in Gasparillo on Thursday night. He was still being interrogated at the San Fernando CID up to late yesterday. Police sources told Newsday that the man resembled the suspect whose image was obtained by the surveillance camera in a San Fernando commercial bank. A digital image of the man was captured as he used the bank’s ABM machine. Fingerprints taken from the man were compared to those found in a grey Ford Laser which police believe the suspect stole and used in the attempted rape of a woman.

Investigators are relying on members of the public to contact them if they see anyone fitting the suspect’s description. The suspect is wanted in connection with the rapes of five women over the past three months. Police said the rapist lurks in and around San Fernando with a car, posing as “PH” taxi driver. Police said the man targets “slim, fragile-looking women.” His latest attack was on Tuesday after he stole a grey Laser in Princes Town and abducted a woman. However, the woman was rescued by a taxi driver after she jumped out of the vehicle on the M2 Ring Road.
