Shooting accused on $300,000 bail

THE 25-year-old man who earlier this week was subdued in Vessigny, La Brea, by ‘super granny’ Elise Joseph, was yesterday granted $300,000 bail by a Pt Fortin magistrate for the five charges which arose from the incident. Joseph, 74, was present in court yesterday to see her grandson’s alleged assailant who stood before Senior Magistrate Herbert Charles. She was greeted by several persons, some of whom shook her hand and commended her for her bravery. Devin Surillo, of Celestial Park, La Brea, was taken before Magistrate Charles around 10 am. Taking a seat in the public gallery at the same time was Joseph who is expected to be the police’s main witness against Surillo, whom she allegedly subdued.

Surillo first appeared before a Justice of the Peace on Thursday. He reappeared in court this time before magistrate Charles on five charges namely possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, wounding with intent, possession of a firearm to endanger life and possession of ammunition to endanger life. Court Prosecutor, Ag Sgt Rohan Pardassie, objected to bail on the grounds that the charges against Surillo were of a very serious nature.

Magistrate Charles however, informed the court that bail should be granted because the charges are bailable offences. Bail was granted to Surillo with a surety in the sum of $300,000. He was ordered to re-appear on July 11. Joseph listened attentively to the proceedings and as she left the courthouse, people shook her hands while others congratulated her for her bravery. Many others called out to her. Asked why she went to court yesterday, Joseph replied: “because I wanted to see him again.”
