Man in court for Petit Valley murder

A 46-year-old man appeared before a Port of Spain magistrate yesterday charged with the murder of a Petit Valley woman who was chopped to death over the weekend.

An expressionless Dexter Simon appeared before Magistrate Lianne Lee Kim in the Port-of-Spain Four A Court where the charge of murder was read to him.

Dazed relatives of the accused man packed an entire row in the public gallery and sobbed silently when the murder charge was read to him.

The charge stated that on July 3, the accused man murdered 21-year-old Melissa Akong at Morne Coco Road, Petit Valley.

Simon was also charged with the attempted murder of Melissa’s sister, 17- year-old Somara Akong.

That incident, according to the charge, also took place at Morne Coco Road, Petit Valley. Both charges were laid indictably.

Representing the accused was attorney Theodore Guerra SC, who asked that he be provided with the statement given by the accused and also for station diary entries made in relation to the incident.

According to reports, the deceased and her sister were both attacked on Sunday following a dispute involving their mother and a man known to them.

The deceased and her sisters were attempting to restrain the alleged attacker who was struggling with their mother when the man, who was armed with a cutlass, turned on the girls instead.

The suspect reportedly turned himself in to the West End Police Station hours after the attack. He was said to be accompanied by a female relative who is a police officer.

Following investigations, Simon was slapped with two charges after the officer received instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The matter was adjourned to July 15.

Two Arima men charged for Palo Seco murder

FIVE DAYS after newly-wed Uttamdeo Marajh was shot dead and his mother wounded in a murder/robbery at the family’s business place in Palo Seco, two Arima men appeared in the Siparia Magistrates’ Court charged with the murder.

Ray Olliverre, 18, and Lyndon Rama, 20, both of Sherwood Park, Arima, appeared before Senior Magistrate Maria Busby Earle-Caddle.

Marajh, 25, a mechanical engineer who got married two months prior to his death, was shot in the leg and head, during the robbery at about 2 pm last Thursday.

Olliverre and Rama were arrested hours after the murder and were subsequently charged by Ag Sgt Jackman.

Yesterday, Earle-Caddle read the murder charges to both accused.

They told the magistrate they did not have an attorney to represent them and asked for a Legal Aid attorney to represent them.

Earle-Caddle told them them the necessary documents needed to be signed for the appointment to be made.

She remanded them in custody and adjourned the matter to July 15.
