Cops still in dark about Monday’s bomb blast
Police officers investigating the bomb blast at Frederick Street, Port-of-Spain on Monday which left 14 persons injured, have confirmed that they do not have any useful information which could lead to arrests. On Monday, Police Commissioner Trevor Paul mandated Snr Supt Leon Anthony, the head of the Port-of-Spain CID to probe the blast. Two officers of the Federal Bureau of Inves-tigations (FBI) arrived in the country on Tuesday and are assisting forensic officers in their probe into the bomb blast. The FBI officers were supposed to visit the scene of the incident yesterday, but decided to work with the evidence collected from the crime scene. Investigators said yesterday that all the eyewitnesses interviewed so far have failed to give any useful information which could lead to arrests. Police have so far confirmed that based on information received, the person who placed the bomb into the dustbin at Frederick Street was a man of mixed origin. Investigators also confirmed that an NHA employee was quizzed about the bomb on Tuesday but was released from custody on Tuesday. A man who was injured and was treated at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital was also interviewed, but no useful in-formation was obtained. Operations at the Forensic Science Centre shut down just after midday yesterday when staff were allowed to leave because of the tropical storm watch. Experts who were supposed to carry out tests on shrapnel secured from the scene of the bomb blast will do so today. They will be assisted by the FBI.
