CWU condemns bomb blast
THE Communication Wor-kers’ Union (CWU) has condemned what it calls the "senseless act" which injured 14 persons when a bomb exploded on Frederick Street, Port-of-Spain, last Monday. According to CWU, what happened represented a watershed in the country’s rapidly changing and fragile social landscape." Noting that there have been acts of collective violence in association with periods of political and social upheaval, quite apart from a soaring crime and murder rate over the last two decades, CWU said: "It is significant that this dastardly incident on July 11 is a first in many respects for our people." The union noted further that there was no obvious co-relation of the "senseless act" to any mass political/social action, nor even organised or disorganised crime. But it made the point: "It is our careful analysis of the political /social climate and great concern to the citizenry, that our union cannot discount the fact that a prominent Political Opposition Leader is on record as preaching civil and other disobedience, and openly advocating destablisation of the society. "He and his minions must not be allowed to have their way, or else it will lead to anarchy." CWU made it clear that it could not ignore threats to the country’s political stability and national security. However, the union called on the rest of the nation to be as calm as possible under the circumstances, and not allow themselves to be intimidated by the perpetrators of the cowardly and thoughtless act.
