Singh: More bombings to come

CARONI EAST MP Ganga Singh said  he expects more acts of violence to follow last Monday’s bomb blast on Frederick Street, Port-of-Spain, which injured 14 persons. He made the point in a motion to the House of Representatives in which he raised the incident as an urgent matter of definite public importance on Friday. “It is our view that this bombing is the initial step of a multi-faceted programme of violence against the people of Trinidad and Tobago.”

Also noting the 188 murders for the year so far, he criticised the Government for failing to provide citizens with a security comfort zone. He noted the chaos after Monday’s blast when motorists and commuters fled the city. “There was no plan in place. People were robbed on the Priority Bus Route.” Singh said the “volatile situation” in Port-of-Spain was exacerbated on Wednesday when the Office of the Prime Minister sent everyone home early because of the threat of Hurricane Emily, causing “massive chaos” on the streets.

He criticised Commissioner of Police Trevor Paul for making a “grand entrance” downtown on Monday in a helicopter which blew dust onto the  blast scene, possibly compromising the evidence. Singh criticised Minister of Works, Colm Imbert, for saying nothing to reporters when he visited the blast scene. “The leadership of the Government ought to be providing guidance to the people, not saying ‘no comment.’” “It is our fear that this is just the beginning. We can expect a rising tide of violence in this society.”
