Dog eat dog at blast site
Officers of the Police K-9 Unit yesterday expressed surprise that after they carried out a thorough check for clues at the George Street bombing with the use of sniffer dogs, the same process was repeated by officers of the Special Anti-crime Unit (SAUTT) at 4 pm yesterday. K-9 Unit officers told Newsday that they were called to the scene and checked for clues after the blast. They expressed surprise that the same process was repeated again by SAUTT officers. K-9 officers said they were not even aware that SAUTT officers had sniffer dogs. "We feel slighted and embarrassed that after the process was carried out, SAUTT did the same thing, making our officers look as though they are incompetent," said disgruntled officers. At 4 pm, three officers dressed in black emerged from unmarked vehicles with the three sniffer dogs at George Street. The officers were identified as SAUTT officers. SAUTT already has helicopters, a blimp, special surveillance equipment, unmarked vehicles and they are now in the process of securing speed boats. SAUTT officers receive an additional $5,000 apart from their salaries and other perks. This matter is now engaging the attention of the Police Second Division which described SAUTT as an illegal unit.
