Naps and Pres looking for President’s Medal
PRINCIPALS of two top secondary schools in San Fernando — Naparima College and Presentation College — have expressed optimism that, with the release of the Advanced Level results, it would increase their chances of National Scholarships this year. Students at both schools received results yesterday, and the principals expressed the hope that the coveted President’s Medal would be awarded to their respective institutions. Naparima College’s acting principal, Kamla Jhagroo, said that this year’s results were better than last year’s with "impressive results" in Mathematics and Science. Seventy-five students wrote the examinations and 31 obtained grade "A" passes in Mathematics. Thirty students from the school received a grade "A" in General Paper. Jhagroo said 23 students got an "A" in Physics, while there were 16 who got an "A" in Chemistry. Five received an "A" in Biology. Concerning the President’s Medal, Jhagroo said the school was on a hat-trick, having copped the prestigious award in 2003 and 2004. Presentation College principal Errol Jaikaransingh said the school received more Grade "A’s" than in 2004. He said of the 104 students who wrote the examinations, 23 obtained a grade "A" in Mathematics. Jaikaransingh said based on the results, the school was on target in maintaining its yearly take of 12 national scholarships. Commenting on his school’s high score in Mathematics, Maths Department head and Dean of Studies, Fayad Ali, said, "We are hoping our scholarships will increase this year. We expected our Maths results this year to be good."
