Priest wants guards at funerals, weddings
Worshippers at the Church of Assumption in Maraval have been advised that due to three break-ins of vehicles at the compound for the year, persons having weddings and funerals there may soon have to arrange their own security. A recommendation for two security officers at the back lawn and one between the central and western gate for eye control in the front, was suggested if the situation worsens. In a letter sent out to parishioners of the church dated August 4, Father Garfield Rochard, the Parish Priest revealed that new security measures may involve closing the gates during worship, weddings, and funerals to ensure no car drives out before the end without identification and unauthorised. The Parish Priest also advised parishioners that private arrangements for their cars to be washed during service should not be continued. This was considered a security risk. Yesterday, Father Rochard told Sunday Newsday that a committee of which he is a member has been reviewing the situation with the break-ins and the general crime situation in the district. He said that the committee watches out for everyone who attends the church and safety and security is one of the main priorities. In the letter sent out by Father Rochard, the issue of night security risk was addressed. The letter stated: "There has been reports of cars being followed, gunshots being heard between KFC and Ambassador Hotel, and since our church is in the middle of these unfortunate scenarios, we wish to draw your attention to this situation." He also revealed that Belle Vue and Dibe have a self-imposed curfew because of gun activity in the neighbourhood. Parishioners were also given the telephone numbers of ten police stations which they can contact in case of emergency. The number of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad was also made available to the parishioners. Recently, the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association (DOMA) sent out e-mail messages to members advising them to avoid using Long Circular at nights — in response to two reports of attempted kidnappings and shootings in that area.
