Eastern invests $750,000 on youth education
THE Eastern Credit Union (ECU) has spent over $750,000 within the past 11 years to boost education among the youth of Trinidad and Tobago. This was disclosed last week by ECU president Lennox Marcelle who is also the Legal Adviser to the Ministry of Labour, Small and Micro-Enterprise Development. Marcelle spoke last week at the credit union’s Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) Bursary Award ceremony held at the La Joya Facility in St Joseph. This year, ECU awarded in excess of $40,000 worth of bursaries to 43 worthy recipients. Marcelle assured that ECU will continue to invest in young people because "they represent the best hope for transforming the society into an environment where every creed and race will enjoy happy, healthy crime-free and successful lives." In an advice to parents present at the function, Marcelle said, "Investment in children is good investment. Nurture your children, love them, serve them and support them." Moreover, he added, "you need to embrace and encourage these young students and work closely with the schools, the mosques, mandirs, churches and other community-based institutions." ECU secretary general/manager Gloria Rolingson also addressed the large gathering and said, "In Eastern’s 32 years of existence, through a passion for education, training and discipline, we have a growth-oriented institution with employees, stakeholders and potential members. "We have improved their lives and the quality of their existence, using tried and successfully proven methods of cooperation and mutual support."
