O’Jays, Natalie Cole light up Tobago Jazz festival
DESPITE a few hiccups yesterday on day two of the first Annual Tobago Gourmet Jazz Festival, which included the original starting time of 1.30 pm being changed to 5 pm — after a mix-up with contracts and an hour-long delay by the performing group the O’Jays — the large crowd who waited patiently, enjoyed themselves when the show finally got underway. Proving that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, Natalie Cole gave the audience its first real taste of jazz with a breathtaking performance that lasted for approximately forty-five minutes. The eight-time Grammy Award winner took the audience on a trip down memory lane particularly with a duet remake she did of her father’s smash hit "Unforgettable." The O’Jays aimed to please and please they did despite an hour-long break between Cole’s performance and theirs. This came about when the O’Jays reportedly did not know they were slated to perform next after Cole. The trio sang some of their major hits including "Money Train;" "She Used To Be My Girl" and "Stairway To Heaven." They also gave the appreciative crowd a taste of hits from their latest album Imagination. Their fellow international artiste, R&B crooner Kenneth "Babyface" Edmond thrilled both young and the not so young with his endless list of hits. The "Bassman from Hell" Shadow (Winston Bailey) and RBTT Redemption Soundsetters were not be outdone on their home turf either and delivered some of their best performances to the appreciative patrons. The headline act of the three-day festival — Stevie Wonder — was slated to perform last night along with several local acts.
