Family wants probe in Cocorite accident
A Bon Air Gardens family, relatives of one of three persons injured in a crash on the Western Main Road on Friday, is calling for a full-scale police probe into the incident in which two persons — Christopher Vaughn, 18, of Westmoorings and Kamara Sheppard, 20 — died as a result of injuries sustained in the Cocorite crash. Jennifer Henry, mother of Brandon Henry, who was pinned in his Toyota Corolla car when a Volkswagen Bora landed on his bonnet, was yesterday thankful that her son is alive, but she feels that the two deaths could have been avoided. Henry is in critical but stable condition at hospital. She said her son and his friends Kamara Sheppard, her brother Din Sheppard and Kevin Pierre were heading west to Diego Martin along the Western Main Road, when a car spun out of control, jumped the median, flipped over and landed on his Corolla. Kamara suffered massive head injuries and died at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital on Saturday afternoon. Din is in serious condition at hospital and his neck is in a brace. His friend, Kevin Pierre, 22, who sustained injuries in the accident, is also in serious condition. The driver of the Volkswagen Bora, Auguste Alexander, remains in a critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit of the Port-of-Spain General Hospital. His parents, who were out of the country when the accident occurred, flew back to Trinidad on Sunday. Police officers told Newsday that based on statements obtained from eyewitnesses in the accident, the police could lay charges in the matter. The officers added that they were still investigating the matter. Kamara will be buried tomorrow after a funeral service at the D’Abadie Kingdom Hall. Her parents were not at home when Newsday visited yesterday, but a relative claimed that Kamara had a bright future and was loved by those who knew her. She was a part-time primary school teacher. She was described as a warm, loving person who cared deeply about children.
