PC Guerra laid to rest

Assistant Supt David Nedd has described slain police officer Carlos Guerra as hardworking, honest, active and firm, but not aggressive.

In the eulogy at the funeral service at the Cumuto Pentecostal Church for PC Guerra, who was killed in an accident at police headquarters, ASP Nedd said, "Carlos arrived for work shortly after 2 pm on Thursday August 11. He joked with his two close friends and they even shared a mango together.

"This was the nature of their closeness and camaraderie.

"His last duty was the serving of a summons for a witness to appear in court. He was rather happy and joyous and he even bought a box of some special type of chicken which he ate.

"Responding to another kidnapping report, he and his friend armed themselves with semi-automatic weapons, joined other officers and left in search of the hostage and her alleged kidnappers.

"Later that night," said Nedd, "when the search ended, they returned to office.

"At the handing over process of weapons," according to Nedd, "an unfortunate incident occurred and both Carlos and another officer were shot. Carlos’ injuries proved to be fatal, and he ended his watch over this nation on the morning of Friday August 12, 2005."

ASP Nedd said, "We all mourn his loss. However, we take solace from the character of this brave, confident and hardworking officer. His was a personality which many of his colleagues tried to emulate."

"Carlos possessed that aura which could have been attained overnight, but which must have been nurtured by caring parents and siblings and reinforced positively over time.

"His attitude and demeanor were outstanding. He always seemed to be a leader and well-rounded person among his peers."

Pastor Noble Auguste said the public should focus on the positive and leave the incident up to God.

Also attending the service were National Security Minister Martin Joseph, Police Commissioner Trevor Paul, acting DCP Winston Cooper, ACP Crime Gilbert Reyes, and ACP Mobile Nazamool, Hosein.
