Taxi driver killed in broad daylight

Marvin Davis, 25, a "PH" driver of Snake Valley, Laventille, was shot dead after he crashed his car into a concrete wall at Shouters Hill, near Rudolph Charles Crescent, Laventille Road.

The bandits took one gold chain, two rings, and two ID bands valued $5,000 from Davis.

According to reports, Davis, aka "Half -ah-Man," picked up two "passengers" outside the Desperadoes panyard at about 11.15 am to be taken to Port-of-Spain. On reaching Shouter Hill, however, a gunshot was heard and the car crashed into a wall.

Two men were then seen fleeing the scene. Davis’ body was found in the car with a bullet wound to the forehead.

When Newsday visited the crime scene, a number of residents described the dead man as a "good fella" who worked hard to get out of a life of poverty.

"That fella was not into anything. All he liked to do was work hard and dress. Is jealous somebody jealous him. That’s why he was killed."

His mother, Betty Davis, who agreed with the residents, preferred to leave justice in the hands of God.

"My son was a good man. All he did was work hard to assist his family."

Police supported the view of the residents, describing him as a "very good fella" whom they often spoke with whenever they visited that part of Laventille.

Police believe Marvin resisted the bandits, and the front "passenger" shot him in the forehead before the car crashed. The money he made that morning was found in his pocket.

His girlfriend, Sherva Critchlow, who is reportedly pregnant, arrived on the scene and, on learning of the killing, collapsed and had to be taken away.

DMO Dr Hills ordered Davis’s body removed to the Forensic Science Centre for an autopsy today.

Police expressed disgust at the length of time the DMO took to get to the crime scene — more than two hours after being contacted.

Visiting the scene were ASPs Rodriguez and Sealy, Insp Singh, Sgts Chatoo and Stewart, and PCs Spence and Ransom Sgt Stewart is investigating.
