Dad in court for beating son with mop handle

A 50-YEAR-old man appeared before a Princes Town magistrate yesterday charged with beating his seven-year-old son with a mop handle. The incident occurred at Borde Narve village near Usine Ste Madeleine in February. The beating caused Vinod Singh to be hospitalised for eight days, during which doctors had to remove his spleen.

The boy’s father, Winston Singh, was arrested on a warrant on Tuesday and yesterday he was taken before Magistrate Joanne O’Connor in the Princes Town Magistrates’ Court.

The magistrate read the charge which alleged that he wounded Vinod with intent. Singh pleaded not guilty to the offence, after which O’Connor granted the man bail in the sum of $10,000 with a surety. It was ordered that a Clerk of the Peace approve the bail.

The charge arose out of an incident which occurred on February 24 around 3.30 pm at the Singh’s Borde Narve home.

Vinod was scolded for using the telephone, and the charge alleged that Singh took a mop handle and dealt the boy several blows, hitting him on the stomach, back and buttocks.

Vinod underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured spleen and was warded for eight days at San Fernando General Hospital.

On Thursday, some six months after the incident, Singh was arrested after a warrant was executed on him at his home.

Cpl Narine Harrigin laid the charge. The case was postponed to Wednesday.
