Nelson honoured by TT Consulate
CALYPSONIAN Robert "Lord Nelson" who recently turned 75, was honoured by Michael Glenn-Art Lashley, Trinidad and Tobago’s Consul General to Toronto and his staff, at the consulate office in Scarborough, last Friday evening. Lashley in an address to a small and intimate gathering, described Nelson as "the quintessential practitioner of the calypso genre, having given the world so many absolutely great recordings among them ‘La La,’ ‘Meh Lover’ and the like." Lashley also embraced the opportunity to formally introduce his newly appointed Deputy Consul General Simone Young whose idea it was he said, to present Nelson with a scroll (incidentally the title of one of Nelson’s well-loved ditties) for his meritorious contributions to calypso/soca. In an appreciation speech Nelson said he was overwhelmed by all the adulation bestowed upon him for the occasion. He compared the tribute being paid to him, to that of an award given to him by the City of New York some time ago. The inscription on the tribute scroll of which Nelson seemed extremely elated reads, "The Consul General of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Toronto, presented to Robert Nelson ‘Lord Nelson’ Calypsonian Extraor-dinaire; in honour of his lifetime contribution to the calypso art form in all its facets, by Mr Michael Glenn-Art Lashley, Consul General of Trinidad and Tobago on August 19, 2005."
