Peter Pitts is dead

Peter Pitts, "The Sunshine Man" of Associated Brands Ltd, died on Sunday morning at his Maraval home, reportedly of a heart attack. He was 77.

From 1963 he became the manager of what was then Radio Guardian which later became 610 Radio. He went to St Mary’s College and attended Loyola High School in Montreal, Canada.

He later joined what was then the Royal Bank of Canada (now RBTT) in 1947; after which he joined the Trinidad Publishing Company Ltd from 1947 to 1962, was transferred to Caribbean Printers in 1962; and returned to Trinidad Publishing in 1963 when he was made manager of the then newly launched radio station — Radio Guardian.

Peter Pitts was also a member of the Trinidad Chamber of Com-merce, the Trinidad Light Operatic Society, Trinidad Dramatic Club, Trinidad Country Club, and the St Andrews Golf Club.

His friends will best remember him for his love to sing old-time calypsoes.

In a release yesterday, Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisa-tion (TUCO) recorded its deep sense of loss over Pitts’ death, stating, "Mr Pitts had consistently demonstrated a lifelong love and passion for calypso and TUCO, in particular Junior Calypso.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and we wish them strength in this time of grief.

"He will be sorely missed."

Pitts also worked closely with the National Carnival Bands Association (NCBA) and National Carnival Commission (NCC) in staging the Junior Parade of Bands.

Efforts to contact representatives of the organisations for a comment proved futile.
