SAUTT cops raid Petit Valley, come up empty-handed

Officers of the Special Anti-Crime Unit (SAUTT) yesterday carried out an exercise in Petit Valley, as part of the anti-crime initiative to flush out persons involved in gang-related activities.

The exercise, which started at 4 am, ended at 9 am. The Night Sun helicopters were used in the exercise.

No one was arrested and nothing seized in the exercise, but SAUTT sources revealed that such exercises will continue.

On Saturday, the Skyship blimp was sent out to Petit Valley, Diego Martin and Laventille as part of SAUTT’s surveillance exercises. Yesterday, based on the information gathered, a decision was taken to execute search warrants at several homes in Petit Valley. Only police officers attached to SAUTT are allowed to search homes and persons. Soldiers and other officers attached to SAUTT acted as support staff for the police.

Senior police officers of the Western Division told Newsday that the gang-related shootings and murders have shifted from Laventille to Petit Valley and Diego Martin.

They added that drug dealers, who are also part of major gangs, are hiding their weapons and using them in murders and shootings. Information reaching the police also suggests that arms and ammunition are delivered to drug dealers in remote areas close to the sea, areas which are only accessible by foot.

Tracks from Petit Valley leading to the sea have been identified as some such drop-off points for arms and ammunition.

Certain parts of Petit Valley, Diego Martin and Carenage are now being considered hot spot crime areas.
