This award is for everyone

RETIRED school principal, Ahmed Latiff Ali, 83, said his Public Service Medal of Merit (Gold) was "an award for everyone".

Ali, of Donaldson Street, San Fernando, a father of five and grandfather of 21, was recognised for service to the community. His wife, Shaffora, also a former school principal, died in 1998.

A delighted Ali told Newsday he was merely the instrument through which the national award was made.

"I treat all people as brothers and sisters together. I do not believe in hatred and racial discrimination."

He said since his retirement from Rio Claro ASJA Primary School, he spent most of his time teaching religious knowledge at primary and secondary schools and in promoting religious activities in South Trinidad.

After graduating from Teacher Training College in 1952, Ali worked as an assistant teacher in Rio Claro. In 1959, he was promoted to principal. He retired in 1984.
