TT Police need to earn public confidence
THE TRINIDAD and Tobago Police Service needs to earn the confidence of the population, President George Maxwell Richards said yesterday in his Independence Day speech at Police Headquarters in Port-of-Spain. The President said while he recognised the many challenges the Service must confront, police officers must be conscious of their prevailing image. "You will know better than I, the internal arrangements to be made in order to achieve this. You must know whether you are satisfied with the way things are. You must acquire the resources and the determination to chart a different course and to redress the situation. "This is not a task for those who cannot commit to the business at hand, or for those who are faint heart, who may be better employed elsewhere," he said. President Richards said the inevitably high profile of the Police Service does not permit any respite from national scrutiny in the matter of crime fighting, and the service must recognise that the expectations of the people in terms of fulfillment of the motto "To protect and serve" are higher now than ever.
