Seven TT students top A ’Levels worldwide
NEWSDAY has learnt that seven Trinidadian students have ranked first place worldwide in different subjects, based on the recently released 2005 results of the Cambridge Advanced Level General Certificate Examinations. A total of 47 students have reportedly made it on the list out of a possible 240 places. However, while the local office of Cambridge has confirmed that the list was forwarded to the Ministry of Education last Tuesday, the list is being treated as "top secret" information. Communications Specialist at the ministry, Mervyn Critchlow, told Newsday that the list will not be made public until next Wednesday at a function which is being planned to honour the high achievers. Principals of the schools which the students attended were informed yesterday, but have been sworn to secrecy. They said they have been asked not to reveal the names of the students so as to maintain "confidentiality." Last year, the list was released without any drum roll or fanfare. There were 38 students on the list, six of whom were ranked number one in varying subjects. The list is used by the ministry in awarding National scholarships, which are usually announced a week after the list is made public. An analysis of this year’s A’ Level results showed an under 50 percent pass rate in three of the 20 subjects written. The subjects were; Geometrical and Mechanical Drawing (47.14), Law (46.15) and Mathematics (45.22). In Art and Design, there was a 97.96 pass rate, followed by a 95.02 pass rate in Literatures in English and a 91.76 pass rate in Spanish. The passing grades are those from A to E.
