Bandits hijack rice truck
A truck load of parboiled rice on its way to make deliveries to supermarkets in north and east Trinidad was hijacked by bandits at Macoya on Thursday. CEO of Trinidad Parboiled Limi-ted of Mc Bean, Couva, Liaquat Ali, said that the truck was being driven by Peter Ramcharan, on its way to El Dorado to drop off goods, when it slowed down near Macoya.
It was then that two men ap-peared on either side of the truck armed with firearms, which were pointed at the driver and a loader, Michael Singh. The Tunapuna police were told that both Ramcha-ran and Singh were beaten, tied up, blindfolded and thrown in the back of the truck. On nearing a cane field along the old Southern Main Road, Caroni, they were dropped off and after untying themselves the matter was reported to the Tunapuna police.
Ali told Sunday Newsday, that up to yesterday morning the police had not been able to make any breakthroughs in investigations, and “I am now a worried businessman considering that a whole truck was stolen with goods, worth around $18,000 and not a word is forthcoming.” He is asking the public to be on the look-out for a White Isuzu truck with registration number TBD 6622, that was used in transporting the rice, and report to the police immediately.
