Cops in court for beating villagers


TWO policemen appeared in the Siparia Magistrates’ Court yesterday on six charges of allegedly beating three villagers of the district.


Police constables Brian Loutan and Shaymanan Ganess appeared before First Court Magistrate Maria Busby Earle Caddle. Loutan and Ganess were charged jointly with three counts of assaulting Dexter Banfield, Ian Richards and Kiel Walker of Thick Village, Siparia.


The two policemen were also jointly charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, in which they allegedly broke Banfield’s jaw. It is also alleged that Loutan and Ganess maliciously destroyed Banfield’s fish valued at $4,000. Banfield is a fisherman. The charges were laid by Cpl Innis Minors of the Siparia Police Station.


The charges arose from an incident on March 9 at Debe Drive, Salt Mine Trace, while the two accused policemen were off-duty. Loutan and Ganess pleaded not guilty to all of the offences.


Magistrate Busby Earle Caddle granted the policemen a total of $55,000 bail to cover all the charges and postponed the cases to September 22.


Loutan and Ganess are attached to the Penal and Point Fortin Police Stations respectively.
