Dookeran calls for ‘principled leaders’ who must listen to the people
In his first public statement since being nominated for the position of Political Leader of the UNC, Winston Dookeran called for "principled leaders" who have "earned the trust of the people" and "not self-serving party leaders" in government. He also stressed that in this time of crisis, all leaders must unite and put their differences aside. The following is the full text of his statement "of intent" which was released yesterday: "For me, this country, this nation of Trinidad and Tobago has always been first. All my political life I have devoted my energies and thoughts to promoting a fair and just society in which every member regardless of race, creed and socio-economic status can develop their potential and achieve their desired quality of life. "This is a time of crisis and it requires an extraordinary effort for all who genuinely care, for all leaders of our society to unite, put our differences aside. Together we must reclaim our country from those who threaten its very existence as a quality place to live. We owe it to ourselves but most importantly to our children to put things right. "I believe in this country, I believe that all our citizens when properly led will achieve the highest aspiration. We must rekindle a national pride in achieving national sustainable development of a quality life for all. We need a competent government and inspiring leadership to move us as a society to be among the best in the world. "We need principled leaders who earned the trust of the people to serve as real national leaders and not self-serving party leaders in government. National development demands that government leaders listen to our citizens and address their needs with an efficient and effective government that delivers the services. "We need a government that is responsive to both the short-term and long-term needs of all the stakeholders of this society. A caring government must use our precious national resources to address the critical issues of today: personal security and safety, quality health care, affordable housing, quality education, and meaningful employment, all of which are definitely possible. We must also invest in our future. We must build today, tomorrow’s infrastructure, capabilities to compete in the global market. "We must assure a stable and just government that guarantees the rights for all, provides a safety net for those in need, as well as a supportive business environment. "I will elicit the help of all who want to join this journey. We must build our future together as one people."
