Bad cops hindering TT safety

CORRUPT POLICEMEN in the police service are having a negative effect on crime plans being implemented by the TT Government. Speaking during a press conference held yesterday at the Crowne Plaza, Professor Ramesh Deosaran, director of the Centre for Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of the West Indies (UWI), said despite Government’s attempt to introduce new crime plans and crime fighting technologies, corrupt policing will not allow them to succeed.

Professor Deosaran said the Government has been under extreme pressure lately from the media and the public to find a quick fix for crime, hence the financing of the Eye in the Sky and the blimp.

Professor Deosaran steered away from questions concerning the unmanned Eye in the Sky, on Independence Square, but believes the blimp is useful in fighting crime.

He said it was necessary that the technology be handled by policemen of integrity and judiciousness.

"Lazy and corrupt policemen will never work, and the technology cannot work for itself," said Professor Deosaran.

He believes that a fresh way of thinking in fighting crime is needed, but no matter what draconian methods are introduced, it all rests in the arms of the police and the judiciary.

Professor Deosaran said crime in communities was also increasing with roberries and murders, but believes the community is too fragmented to deal with the violence of criminals.

"Everyone is being attacked, and we do not know the reason why people in communities are so segregated.

"The Government has deserted the Community Police which was effective, and they need to reinsert that human element, just as they have inserted the technology element," said Deosaran.
