CJ hits attorneys for sloppy work
Chief Justice Satnarine Sharma was yesterday severely critical of attorneys in two separate matters for sloppy and tardy work before the Appeal Court, warning that sloppy work will not be tolerated in the future, and that attorneys will not come away un-scathed. The CJ even put a tongue-lashing on a female attorney who appeared before the court, which was dealing with motion applications. Just three days prior, CJ Sharma had publicly chastised attorneys at the opening of the 2005/06 Law Term for a lack of proper courtroom behaviour, punctuality and a decline in standards. For some time now, the Chief Justice had been pleading with attorneys to get their act together and cut out trashy work and shiftless behaviour. In some instances, he had even threatened to fine slack attorneys. In yesterday’s matters before the CJ and Justices Stanley John and Ivor Archie, the attorneys had either failed to file their documents on time or have them properly before the court. In one matter, the court threatened to dismiss the motion but noted that it would be the applicant who would suffer because of the shoddy work of the attorney. In the other, the attorney was sent back to do the proper paperwork. The court was even critical of the slipshod way some attorneys ran their offices. CJ Sharma noted that attorneys have been making poor excuses when they bring sloppy work before the court. "Things are getting worse and must end," he warned. The CJ noted that attorneys have been given sufficient warning and the time has come for the court to deal with this decline in standards.
