Firefighters tame Chaguanas blaze
QUICK action by Chaguanas and Couva Fire Stations fire fighters during the early hours of yesterday morning, prevented a commercial building housing four businesses from being completely destroyed by fire. According to a report, smoke was seen coming from the top floor of the building located at Montrose, Chaguanas, at 2.20 am. The split-level concrete and wood structure is owned by MK Asgarali of Calcutta Number 1, Freeport. MK Asgarali and Sons Ltd distributes aluminium building products in Freeport and Chaguanas. Fire appliances from both Chaguanas and Couva were on the scene within minutes and were able to contain the blaze to the top floor. The building was valued at $750,000 and damage estimated at $300,000. The report stated that the four businesses situated on the ground floor suffered water damage. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Carl Scipio, acting Divisional Fire Officer (DFO) Winston Woods and acting DFO Peter Baptiste of Central Fire Division, visited the scene. The report stated that fire prevention officers returned to the scene yesterday and conducted additional investigations to determine how the fire started.
