Objection to Panday’s clasped hands
THE EDITOR: Members of my family have received by mail, a pamphlet headed "Panday’s Slate" soliciting their vote in Sunday’s election. The pamphlet’s symbol is that of the "praying hands." To my surprise however, it does not symbolise the praying hands of those who are devoted to God in piety, righteousness and worship. It is only the "praying hands" of Panday. The handout, unequivocally, states: "On Sunday October 2, 2005 I ask that you go out and vote for my slate of candidates whose symbol is my clasped hands. Look for the symbol of my clasped hands on the ballot paper and cast your vote next to it." Signed Basdeo Panday. (Italics are mine). The picture of the "clasped hands" seems to be the actual hands of Panday. As a member of the clergy I take umbrage to the fact that this act of devotion in prayer can be personalised into the hands of only one man. In Islam, this is considered to be idol worship. In the same way that many find objection to accepting the "Trinity Cross" as a symbol of the highest award in our land, I can vouch that no true Muslim would dare put an X next to the symbol of "Panday’s clasped hands" as it would be considered an act of Kufr (Unbelief).
