Drug traffickers sentencing put off

The sentencing of two men found guilty of possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking was yesterday postponed by a High Court judge, who ordered that a Probation Officer’s report be submitted for the two accused.

Justice Malcolm Holdip, who presided in the matter in which Keith Bissessar and Gabriel Deosaran were charged, yesterday deferred sentencing until the reports are made available to the court. On Tuesday, attorney Ricky Rahim, who represented the accused, had requested that a report be conducted on his client, Deosaran, before he submitted a plea of mitigation on his client’s behalf. During yesterday’s proceedings, attorney Pamela Elder SC, who appeared on behalf of Bissessar, told Holdip that she had not yet received instructions from her client concerning his next course of action.

The two men were arrested on August 6, 1999, during a police exercise at a house on Huggins Street, Tacarigua. They were found to be in possession of 484 kilos of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a nine millimetre pistol, and ten rounds of nine millimetre ammunition.

The matter was heard before a nine-member jury at the Port-of-Spain Second Criminal Court. After a three-hour deliberation on Tuesday, both men were found guilty of the three charges laid against them by a majority verdict. Hearing will resume on October 26.
