New scoring in Solo badminton

TRINIDAD and Tobago’s Badminton Association will host the Solo Beverages Open championship from October 10 to 14 at the Chaguanas Regional Indoor Sporting Association (CRISA) Auditorium.

And at the tournament they intend to experiment with the new scoring format of three games to 21 points rally style.

The International Badminton Federation is experimenting with the new scoring format in an effort to try and generate more television viewership and spectator appeal with a shorter version of the game.

They are also experimenting with a system of five games to 11 points rally style.

In a media release, president of the Badminton Association, Ronald Clarke said the rally type format is used in racquet sports such as table tennis where you get points for every winner scored as well as for every mistake your opponent makes and vice versa.

Tests are currently being conducted worldwide in different tournaments and at the end of the exercise, a decision will be made whether to change the system or not he said.

Clarke, a former national badminton star, said: "I think this version of the game will assist the player in understanding the importance of limiting mistakes. Many of our players make unforced errors and this new scoring format will certainly cause them to be cautious."

Meanwhile he feels the scoring system has the potential to make the game even more exciting.

Action in the Solo Beverages tournament begins on Monday with the finals carded for October 14. The tournament is expected to spark spectator interest with a number of this country’s top players in action.

Among them are the talented Anil Seepaul, a five-time national champion as well as Kerwyn Pantin, the current national title-holder, who recently completed a two-month stint in Bulgaria. Also expected to play is Darron Charles, a former national champion who recently returned home after completing studies in Cuba.

However Justin Siu and Rahul Rampersad are in China on a two month stint as well and will miss the championship.

Meanwhile a number of junior champions have been drafted to boost interest including Earnesto Dean and Mitra Ramcharan.

On the women’s side, Sabrina Cassie, Zeudi Mack, Kerian Quan Chee and Stephanie Mitchell will do battle for honour on their side of the draw.
