Stop Tobago Fest madness, now
THE EDITOR: Once again, I was caught in the late afternoon’s traffic in Scarborough. However, this time quite oblivious that very soon I would hear the pounding of music trucks and the blockage of some streets because the annual Tobago Fest parade was in progress. I pity the poor policemen who could have been more constructively deployed and the other authorities who are forced to put up with this unnecessary festival. What is Tobago Fest anyway? Since returning home I am yet to get an explanation or reason for this festival thrust upon Tobagonians at this time of the year. Who participates? Who benefits? Why is the Tobago House of Assembly supporting this festival? Apart from a few stragglers and some dancers on parade, I observe the presence of a uniform group of small children whom I understand is a Speech Band. These youngsters some barely eight years old were gyrating and wining in the most obscene manner. Why have our children been brought into this? Where are their parents or teachers? Don’t they have homework? My Chief Secretary the few bandleaders who bring out their band of 20 or less masqueraders are benefiting financially, but the average citizen is totally disgusted. Tobago does not need any Tobago Fest. Please stop this madness now. ELSA MC BRIDE Tobago
