Police raid slain gang leader’s home

A large contingent of heavily armed police and soldiers yesterday surrounded the sprawling John John mansion of slain gang leader Mark Guerra in search of a gunman who fired two shots at Guerra’s widow.

Just after 9 am, police and soldiers from the Inter-Agency Task Force responded to a report from Mark Guerra’s widow, Beverly Guerra, that she was shot at by a man she knew just after 8 am.

Guerra, a mother of five, claimed the man asked to see one of her children and she refused, causing him to become aggressive.

Officers led by ASP Sealey surrounded the house in search of the gunman, which caused a traffic pile-up near the Winston Spree Simon sign, as motorists and passengers tried to get a first hand look at the police/army activities.

Dressed in hijab, Guerra told police that she had an altercation with a man who slapped her.

She also claimed that as she was leaving, she threw a bottle at the man who fired two shots at her, which narrowly missed.

A report was made at the Besson Street Police Station resulting in a large contingent of police/army officers raiding the house in search of the suspect.

Although the man could not be found, the officers searched Guerra’s home for arms and ammunition.

Nothing was found, but the officers’ action caused quite a stir in John John.

A mother and her young baby, who were occupants of the house, were privy to the police/army raid. During the police/soldier exercise, President George Maxwell Richards, drove past in his official vehicle.

The raid on the Guerra home lasted for more than 30 minutes. Police have since issued a warrant for the arrest of the gunman.

The suspect, a close relative of slain gang member Mark Guerra, is expected to be charged with shooting with intent, possession of a firearm to endanger life, and possession of ammunition to endanger life.

He is also expected to be charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence.
