DOOKERAN SPEAKING OVER PNM’S HEAD
THE EDITOR: Camille Robinson-Regis had the temerity to describe Winston Dookeran as an intellectual fraud. Here was a former minister of planning, a former acting prime minister, a former governor of the Central Bank, a former chairman of the Shipping Company of Trinidad and Tobago and a former Ivy League lecturer, delivering a Budget reply, apparently oblivious to the vacuous intellectual capacity of those on the other side. Mr Dookeran, the new political leader of the UNC must realise that he was not speaking to the Governors of the World Bank, members of the IADB, or the International Monetary Fund, but to a bunch of hapless and hopeless politicians. He must also realise that he was not speaking to the PNM led by Dr Eric Williams, but one led by Patrick Manning and includes the likes of Martin Joseph and Conrad Enill. Mr Dookeran must adjust his speaking notes in a manner which will be able to attract the attention of those who seem to have the intellectual capacity of a snail so when he says the Budget statement lacks elementary economic logic, they may be able to understand him. Mr Dookeran should also realise that the PNM is now in panic mode since he has assumed leadership of the UNC and since they cannot attack his unblemished character. Come on Winston, take your message to an intelligent electorate. The country is eager to get the politics right! RABINDRA MOONAN San Fernando
