Man on trial for robbing doctor
A MAN who pretended to have a "problem" with his penis and who allegedly whipped out a fake firearm and robbed the doctor who was examining him, went on trial in the San Fernando High Court on Monday, on a charge of robbing Dr Manniram Rampaul. Christopher Thorne, 28, is before Madame Justice Alice Yorke Soo Hon on the charge of robbing Rampaul on December 2, 1997, at his High Street office in Rio Claro. Thorne is also charged with using an imitation firearm to carry out the robbery. Thorne allegedly robbed Rampaul of $700 and two gold rings, one of which had a black stone. During the trial on Monday, retired police Insp Leslie Boodoo was one of two officers who testified in the case. Boodoo told the nine-member mixed jury that when Rampaul pointed out the accused in an identification parade, he (Rampaul) said, "This is the man who robbed me of my cash and my two gold rings." Also testifying was PC Alexis Garcia, who told the court that Rampaul was on his way to the Tableland Police Station when he spotted Thorne and another person in a car. That car was stuck in traffic and Rampaul alerted Garcia.
